Entertaining Your Cat

Is your cat sleeping right now? There’s a pretty good chance that the answer to that question is yes. Kitties definitely do love their beauty sleep! Fluffy can’t sleep all the time, however, so it’s important for you to offer her entertainment options. Here, a Loma Linda, CA vet discusses entertaining your cat.

Toys

First thing first: make sure Fluffy has lots of playthings to pounce on and push beneath the couch. Classic cat toys, like catnip mice, are fine, but you will also find lots of cute modern playthings. Why not offer your kitty a mechanical mouse, robotic fish, or automated laser pointer? Of course, if you want to go in the opposite direction, you can make your cat’s things. Look online for great ideas and instructions.

Purrniture

Cats love to explore. Get your furball a cat tent or pet tipi to investigate. Cat towers are also great, and are particularly beneficial because they help keep kitties active by encouraging them to jump and climb.

Playtime

Spend a few minutes a day playing with Fluffy. Use a toy you can control, like a laser pointer or dangling feather toy, to make it more fun and challenging for her. Timing those tricky pounces right requires real concentration. This is great for your furball’s mind!

Window Views

Birdwatching is one of Fluffy’s favorite ways to spend time. Make your four-legged friend a window seat in a spot with a good view. Your furball may spend hours just sunbathing and watching local wildlife!

Vertical Space

As you may have noticed, kitties love high spaces. Fluffy doesn’t have a very good view of her kingdom from floor level! Get your furball some vertical space, so she can supervise her domain with that adorable smug look cats do so well.

Stimulation

If Fluffy stays home alone while you go off to work, turn a radio on before you leave. The background noise will soothe your pet, and keep her from feeling so lonely. Some cats even enjoy watching DVDs for kitties.

Affection

Spend some time with Fluffy every day, and pay lots of attention to her. Even a quick ear scratch or forehead kiss as you walk by can help your kitty feel loved, and keep that motor going!
